How can we create healthier workplaces & foster resilience in ourselves and others?
There is a lot of confusion around the root cause(s) of disease (dis-ease), suffering, lack of resilience. Modern medicine is fabulous in treating the symptoms, but we need to address the root cause.
The core insight of the last decade of research into the causes of suffering / symptoms / trauma is that it comes through our neuro-biology (see Stephen Porges’ seminal work on the Polyvagal Theory).. The things that hold us back are more often that not in our bodies, our nervous systems, our biology. So mental health ultimately means nervous system resilience.
One of the most important things regarding health & happiness is to become trauma-informed and to do your trauma resolution work. Trauma resolution - be it relational trauma, shock trauma, systemic trauma - fosters resilience in life & business.
For trauma resolution we need to understand embodiment - clever thinking is not sufficient. I think Sasha Cuff’s recent “The Physiology of Trauma” does a great job at addressing the different levels of trauma and point to ways to resolve trauma in trauma-informed somatic psychotherapy / somatic coaching.
If more people knew about trauma, how it is generated individually but also collectively and intergenerationally our workplaces, and our lives, could be deeply transformed into better, happier, more productive and ultimately more resilient places.
Learning about trauma is the next step, the next level in personal & organizational development.
